Single tubes coolers have a compact design. Using single tube coolers, it has to make sure that the pressure of the oil side will always be higher for approximately 300 mbar (static pressure) than the pressure of the water side, even if oil pump is switched off.
GEA Transformer-Oil-Water Cooler with Double Tube Safety Technology (WKD)
Compared to single tube transformer oil coolers, the tube bunde of the double tube construction has two tube plates at each end. In the case an occurred damage of the tube, e.g. due to corrosion, the water will not contaminate the environment, but will keep in the leakage clearance and will cause an alarm signal. Even though possible defect tubes, both media will be securely separated and the cooler can be still operated till the next revision without expensive standstills. This safety technology enables a higher water operating pressure (max. 10 bar standard) than the pressure at the oil side.
